In 2014, the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History and Zocalo Public Square partnered to launch What It Means To Be An American, a collaborative multi-year initiative aimed at engaging leading thinkers, public figures and Americans from all walks of life to explore how the United States became the nation it is today.  Original humanities journalism, published twice weekly on the project website www.whatitmeanstobeamerican.org pairs with a series of free public events across the U.S. to foster a national conversation on the experience of American identity.
