DKII has embarked on an Oral History project with stories from more than 75 friends, family, colleagues, and former staff members in Hawaii, Washington, DC, throughout our nation and the world.   These wonderful conversations help to tell the story of Dan Inouye, adding much color, emotion and context to his papers which are at the University of Hawaii’s Hamilton Library.

INOUYE DIGITAL BOOK AVAILABLE ON ITUNES

The Government of Japan established the Tomodachi Inouye Scholars as a part of its Kakehashi student exchange program. This program supports American undergraduate students to visit Japan for a short-term exchange, and Japanese undergraduate students to visit the United States. The goal is to embed Senator Inouye’s story, legacy and values into the scholar’s program as a means of engaging a “Tomodachi generation” of young Japanese and American leaders committed to learning about each other’s cultures and countries with the hope that it contribute to a more cooperative and prosperous world. The U.S. Embassy in Tokyo and the U.S.-Japan Council assist the Japanese government to ensure a successful launch of the Tomodachi Inouye Scholars.

Senator would often say that when you take the time to focus on similarities and common ground – when you can disagree without being disagreeable – so much more can be accomplished. He applied this simple lesson to all of his work, whether at home or abroad. The recognition of his leadership internationally is indeed most heartwarming.

In the Spring of 2016 students from Emerson College spent a week in Japan as Tomodachi Inouye Scholars. The students, under the supervision of Professor Paul Niwa produced an ibook entitled “Inouye” about Senator Inouye and their trip to Japan. Each chapter is written by one of the students. The book is free and can be downloaded here.
